The first generation Kindle was released in 2007, sold out in a matter of hours, and actually remained out of stock for several months, showing its popularity and consumers’ interest. It was a simple device with a high contrast screen. It was about the size of most books, but much thinner, and could hold somewhere around 200 books. Additional generations followed with upgrades to storage capacity, user controls, screen size, and more. For the most part, however, they remained pretty straight-forward E-Readers that are purpose-designed for reading books.

The Kindle has some really cool features for reading; integrated notes, bookmarks, social integration (ie: share and see notes from other readers), book lending and borrowing, and live dictionary look up (if connected to the internet.) If you travel a lot and need “always on” internet connectivity, you can also purchase the Kindle device with 3G built in (like a mobile phone) for connectivity.

In 2011, Amazon realized they probably should release a tablet-type device to compete with the iPad and other tablets, so they came out with the Kindle Fire, which features a color screen, browser, and Android-based operating system that allows users to run applications, browse the internet (the original Kindle could browse too, but it was terrible), and enjoy music and videos.
